Were 100 Lashes Islamically Justified?
Afghans Rally Against Public Lashings Of Teenagers share See comments Print Unmarried girls in Afghanistan — one of the most deeply religious and conservative countries in the world— are often restricted to their homes and banned from having relationships with men outside their immediate families. Brutal punishments often await Afghan women and girls who break the social norm.
Some women who are accused or found guilty of having a relationship with a man outside marriage or an extramarital affair are publicly flogged. Meanwhile, others, particularly in Taliban-controlled areas, are tried by shadow religious courts and publicly executed or stoned to death. But many Afghans consider these extrajudicial executions and floggings un-Islamic and unlawful. On September 24, outrage over the latest incident spilled over onto the streets of Kabul, with hundreds of people protesting the recent lashings of two teenage girls — one of whom was later executed — for having a relationship with their purported boyfriends.

The horrifying story describes the sentencing of a woman from Sri Lanka, working as a maid for a Saudi Arabian family, after she was accused of adultery. In November , an unnamed, married year-old Sri Lankan woman was implicated in adulterous relations with another single, Sri Lankan man while the pair were working in Saudi Arabia.
Both the man and woman were charged with adultery by an Islamic Court in the capital of Saudi Arabia, Riyadh, it remains unclear how the woman and her lover were caught by Saudi Arabian authorities. The unidentified Sri Lankan woman was sentenced to death while the man she had been caught with was given a comparatively light sentence of lashes. When the case came to the attention of the Sri Lankan media, the population and Government were outraged and legal assistance and diplomatic pressure was applied by the Sri Lankan Government.
In a fortuitous turn of events, growing international pressure eventually lead to a secondary court re-sentencing the Sri Lankan woman to 3 years in jail.
