Original date given was 18 December but at the scan it was moved to 31 Dec. It just doesn’t quite add up by my reckoning of when I think I ovulated and when I know we did the deed! Unless you have an early pregnancy scan most of you will be given your estimated due date at the week scan. Of course you have probably already used an online due date calculator. This is where you discover that your due date isn’t based on the date you conceived, it’s actually calculated from when your last menstrual period started your LMP. It’s because it gives a definite date for health professionals to work with. There would be so many variables if it was calculated from when you think you conceived, especially as everyone’s cycles are different and the fact that you don’t necessarily conceive on the day you have sex! But this will only give you a rough idea. This is especially true if you have an irregular cycle or have been on the Pill for example. Experts say that the scan date can sometimes come out as less pregnant than suggested by your LMP.
Nuchal Translucency Ultrasound
Transvaginal ultrasound is performed using a special transducer which is slightly thicker than a tampon. It is covered with a disposable latex sheath and lubricating gel, then gently placed into the vagina. The probe sits in the vagina throughout the examination which usually takes between minutes. Most patients find the examination much more tolerable when compared to a cervical PAP smear.
Jul 27, · The dating scan is the most accurate, or so I have been told, but I think it depends when you got it. I had mine done at 8 weeks and set me a date of Aug. 27, but that was at a fertility clinic.
My cycle is 28 days so just worked out ovulation would have been between 20th th of July. T TabithaLindsay From the first day of my last period I was dated a week and three days further along than I actually was. They just use that date because it’s something concrete they can base it off of before they can see the actual measurements on the ultrasound. The ultrasound will be more accurate.
I know it’s a little discouraging because you feel set back. My doctor sent me for a second dating ultrasound a few weeks later and it was easier for them to date off of. Maybe ask your doctor to schedule another dating ultrasound for two weeks from now?
How accurate do you think a dating ultrasound is?
Dating and viability What is a dating scan? A dating scan is an ultrasound examination which is performed in order to establish the gestational age of the pregnancy. Dating scans also reveal other important information such as: Most dating scans are done with a trans-abdominal transducer and a fullish bladder. If the pregnancy is very early the gestation sac and fetus will not be big enough to see, so the transvaginal approach will give better pictures.
The gestational sac is the first identifiable structure routinely imaged in the first trimester. It is identified by transabdominal ultrasound as early as 5 weeks’ gestation and may be seen as early as 4 weeks’ gestation by transvaginal ultrasound. 15, 16, 47 The gestational sac is an echo-free space containing the fluid, embryo, and extraembryonic structures.
History of Technology Heroes and Villains – A little light reading Here you will find a brief history of technology. Initially inspired by the development of batteries, it covers technology in general and includes some interesting little known, or long forgotten, facts as well as a few myths about the development of technology, the science behind it, the context in which it occurred and the deeds of the many personalities, eccentrics and charlatans involved.

Background We think of a battery today as a source of portable power, but it is no exaggeration to say that the battery is one of the most important inventions in the history of mankind.
Volta’s pile was at first a technical curiosity but this new electrochemical phenomenon very quickly opened the door to new branches of both physics and chemistry and a myriad of discoveries, inventions and applications. The electronics, computers and communications industries, power engineering and much of the chemical industry of today were founded on discoveries made possible by the battery.
Pioneers It is often overlooked that throughout the nineteenth century, most of the electrical experimenters, inventors and engineers who made these advances possible had to make their own batteries before they could start their investigations. They did not have the benefit of cheap, off the shelf, mass produced batteries.
For many years the telegraph, and later the telephone, industries were the only consumers of batteries in modest volumes and it wasn’t until the twentieth century that new applications created the demand that made the battery a commodity item. In recent years batteries have changed out of all recognition.

Underestimation of gestational age by conventional crown-rump length growth curves. Reprinted with permission of American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists Variations in the measurement of CRL can be attributed to differences in fetal growth patterns. Such differences are related to factors similar to those that influence birth weight curves, including maternal age and parity, prepregnancy maternal weight, geographic location, and population characteristics.
These include incorporation of the yolk sac or lower limbs in the CRL measurement, excessive curling or extension of the fetus, and tangential section of the trunk. The biparietal diameter BPD is one of the most commonly measured parameters in the fetus. Campbell was the first investigator to link fetal BPD to gestational age 20 ; however, since this original report, numerous publications on this subject have appeared in the literature.

Are you sure that you want to delete this answer? Yes Sorry, something has gone wrong. Your pregnancy will still be counted as 40 weeks so they will take the date of conception and add two weeks to it. Even women who know their lmp, when they ovulated and conceived and the scan backs all this up are still likely to give birth outside of their due date.
The scan is supposed to be accurate to within a few days which somehow by the end of pregnancy has grown to an entire month! That’s the crazy work of science for you. So for example if your due date was 15 May you could give birth two weeks either side of that and not actually be considered early or late. Although most women consider themselves late once they’ve gone over their due date it’s not how medical professionals will view it.
Technically the earlier the scan is done the more accurate the due date and even by around 12 weeks it can be out. Very early on the foetus doesn’t vary much in size between women but as it grows it varies just like all babies vary in size at birth. Since the date is worked out my taking measurements of the foetus it is a bit hit and miss. What makes it more inaccurate is that the sonographer has to be really careful too getting the perfect image and taking a measurement as accurate as possible.
You can send 10 people in to do the scan and most likely get 7 or 8 different results.

First trimester ultrasound is performed in the first months of a pregnancy. Pregnancy ultrasounds are performed mainly using transabdominal ultrasound. For many women, especially after 8 weeks gestation, sufficient information about the baby may be obtained with transabdominal ultrasound only. However, in the early pregnancy, the developing embryo is very small at 6 weeks gestation, the baby is only mm long and a transvaginal ultrasound may be required to get a better image of the baby.
Transvaginal ultrasound is safe and commonly performed during all stages of pregnancy, including the first trimester.

It is usually part of an assessment called combined first trimester screening. Combined first trimester screening Combined first trimester screening assesses the risk for your baby having certain chromosomal abnormalities trisomy 13, 18 and This testing combines the nuchal translucency ultrasound with specific blood tests. Nuchal translucency ultrasound alone can also provide this risk assessment, but it is not as accurate as combined first trimester screening.
Combined first trimester screening is a non-invasive way of assessing your risk, which means it does not involve putting needles into the placenta or amniotic sac, as happens with CVS and amniocentesis. This means that combined first trimester screening simply tells us if your risk is low or high. For example, it tells us whether your baby has a low risk of having trisomy 13, 18 or 21, or whether your baby has a high risk of having trisomy 13, 18 or This test gives us an indication of whether we should worry about your baby based on these results.
This means that combined first trimester screening will not give us a definitive answer. Chorionic villus sampling and amniocentesis are invasive tests, involving putting needles into the placenta or amniotic sac, and they are associated with an increased risk of miscarriage.
